It had a fantastic story that inter-wove great bits from the ride at the Magic Kingdom. The 2nd movie just felt like it was there to get us to the 3rd movie (I had the same feeling after I saw Back to the Future 2). The 3rd movie, while visually impressive didn't have the fun story that the 1st one had. The best Pirates movie was the first one; Curse of the Black Pearl.
