Secretariat Bluray/DVD Review

My daughter loves anything to do with horses.  To back that statement up she had to go on the pony ride in Fort Wilderness each year until she was too “old” to go anymore.  My wife also loves things that deal with horses.  This movie was a great find.  Finding movies that focus on horses is almost an impossible thing to do.  Well, Disney allowed us to review the upcoming movie Secretariat.  At the end of the movie Penny is actually shown, and on the Bluray you can find an additional discussion with the real Penny.  I feel that this movie helped my daughter understand that “You can accomplish anything that you put your mind to.”  This movie also shows how close a bond a person can have with an animal.  This is important to any true pet lover.

Watching the movie in HD picture, and sound had the feeling of actually being there.  This shows the technology that was brought to play.  We only wish a lot more movies were this way, and maybe Disney is going to do this more.  Watching it from this viewpoint made us realize what the jockey actually goes through.

To summarize the movie it is about a woman taking the helm of a race horse, anddoing what others thought couldn’t be done.  Make sure you get your hands on this movie.  Rent it, or Buy it… Just don’t miss this one.

We gave the movie 10 out of 10.  A great story that has a lesson to be learned by all.

Here is the release information…

Alice In Wonderland 60th Anniversary Combo Pack Review

We were offered to review the upcoming release of Disney’s Alice In Wonderland 60th Anniversary Special Edition Bluray/DVD package.  This was great because seeing it in a new way after 60 years was something we enjoyed doing.  The original movie was released in 1951.  This was a movie that Walt personally had his hands in.  My daughter has seen our VCR tape of Alice, but seeing the movie in high definiti0n was a definite treat.  The colors, and sounds of the movie seem much more vibrant.  Seeing some of the bonus features included in the combo pack were an added bonus.  The interactive game was a creative addition.  Through the Keyhole was nice for me being that I have seen the movie, and seeing the reference points was really excellent.

Alice In Wonderland is a very comical story that almost anyone will love.  We will watch the movie time, and time again.  I find the Cheshire Cat to be the best sub-character.  Wife likes the Mad Hatter, and our little one loved the White Rabbit.  If you have ever watched the VCR version, then you will want to watch this edition.

We give the movie a 10 out of 10.  A “Classic” movie that is great no matter what.

We received a combo pack to review.  Receiving the combo pack had no influence on our review.  As always our review is our factual opinion.

Here is the release information…

In the film, viewers can look forward to following Alice’s adventures as she chases the White Rabbit on a magical journey into the fantastical world of Wonderland. It’s a topsy-turvy place that gets “curiouser and curiouser” as Alice’s madcap adventures introduce her to some truly unforgettable characters – the Mad Hatter, March Hare, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts and more. It’s a great animated story that has pleased the eyes and ears of old and new generations alike.

The animated version of ALICE IN WONDERLAND still remains an all-time American-favorite to this day. Produced by Walt Disney himself and based primarily on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with a few additional elements from Through the Looking-Glass, the film was made complete with help from filmmakers Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske (Cinderella, Peter Pan) and the voices of Kathryn Beaumont as Alice (also the voice of Wendy Darling in Peter Pan), Ed Wynn (Mary Poppin; Cinderella) as the Mad Hatter, J. Pat O’Malley (One Hundred and One Dalmatians; The Jungle Book) as Tweedledee and Tweeledum, Verna Felton (Cinderella; Sleeping Beauty; The Jungle Book) as Queen of Hearts, Sterling Holloway (The Jungle Book; Sleeping Bueaty; The Aristocats) as the Cheshire Cat , Richard Haydn (The Sound of Music; Young Frankenstein) as Caterpillar and Bill Thompson (Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan; Sleeping Beauty) as the White Rabbit.

Walt Disney first created the idea of creating Lewis Carroll’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND book into a full-length animated movie back in 1923 when he was just a young twenty-one year filmmaker trying to make a name for himself. After more than 30-years in the making, and after four successful animated releases under his belt (i.e., Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Fantasia and Bambi), Walt finally released his true vision for the animated film Alice in Wonderland.

This 60th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray release of ALICE IN WONDERLAND celebrates many of Walt’s accomplishments with this film showcasing its amazing artwork, spectacular songs and dazzling animation. And be sure to dive deeper into the rabbit hole and check-out all of its unique bonus features.

Film Synopsis:

ALICE IN WONDERLAND is a story about a young girl who grows bored listening to her older sister read aloud from a history book about William I of England. While dozing off, she dreams about falling down a rabbit hole (“Wonderland”) that is populated by a peculiar series of misadventures. The always sensible Alice whirls through a world of contradictions, imagination and surprises where she encounters amazing creatures – including a pocket watch-toting White Rabbit, the imperious Queen of Hearts and her army of playing cards, a Cheshire Cat with a lingering smile in an unforgettable fantasy, and the off-kilter Madhatter – and tests her sensibility and courage. In the end it’s all a dream, she is awakened by her sister’s voice, and as the two of them return home for teatime where she realizes that perhaps logic and reason exist for purpose. Disney Cooking In My House

We love Disney cooking when we are on vacation in Disney World, or on the Disney Cruise.  For Christmas this year I had to get my wife some more things for her kitchen.  Among other gifts I got her a brand new Disney waffle maker, and a Disney salt n pepper shaker.  She has a rather large salt n pepper shaker collection so I think that I will be stopping for a while.  I wanted to get her some really nice cooking things, but I couldn’t locate them locally, and I don’t do my shopping until late.  I saw a Disney Winnie The Pooh popup tea pot, and same really nice cookware like they use in the Disney kitchens.  I couldn’t get them this year, but maybe next year.  What is weird is that each time I searched for Disney cookware I happened to get results for le creuset cookware.  They don’t make Disney, but the cookware looked really nice.  Maybe I should email them directly to see if they have anything that would work for my needs.  I am trying to locate the recipe for Disney’s Bananas Foster.  That was the best, but 1900 Park Fare stopped serving it, and I have been very upset since because I can’t find it anywhere on grounds.

2 Million Vitamins

Did you read about the Disney/Marvel vitamin settlement?  Well apparently marketers of these vitamins were making false claims.  I find this pretty incredible.  I would almost bet that another company wanted to cause some damage to another company, or someone somewhere decided that they wanted to make a few bucks.  Good thing they don’t make mens and womens vitamins, or diet pills because there would probably be lots of lawsuits brought on for not performing to their expectation.

Here is an exerpt…

As part of its ongoing efforts to stop bogus health claims, the Federal Trade Commission has reached asettlement requiring major marketers of children’s vitamins to stop making false and unproven claims that their supplements promote healthy brain and eye development in children.  The companies have agreed to pay $2.1 million to provide refunds to consumers who purchased certain multivitamins in their Disney and Marvel Heroes line.

The FTC charged NBTY, Inc. and two subsidiaries, NatureSmart LLC andRexall Sundown, Inc., with making deceptive claims about the amount of DHA – an Omega-3 fatty acid – used in their line of Disney- and Marvel Heroes-licensed children’s multivitamin gummies and tablets.  The companies also made unsupported claims that a daily serving of the products promotes healthy brain and eye development in children, according to the FTC administrative complaint.

Sold by major retailers such as CVS Pharmacy, Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Kroger, Kmart, Meijer, and Rite Aid, as well as online, the multivitamins featured characters such as the Disney Princesses, Winnie the Pooh, Finding Nemo, and Spider-Man.  Product packaging and print ads promoting the vitamins had bold graphics highlighting that theproducts contained DHA, but in reality, the products allegedly had only a trace amount of DHA.  While the vitamins’ packaging touted the purported health benefits of 100 milligrams of DHA, a daily serving of the Disney and Marvel multivitamins for children ages four years and older contained only one thousandth of that amount (0.1 mg or 100 mcg), according to the FTC’s complaint.

The FTC alleged that the packaging and ads for the Disney and Marvel multivitamins misrepresented that they contained a significant amount of DHA, and that NBTY, NatureSmart, and Rexall Sundown made unsubstantiated claims that the amount of DHA provided by the multivitamins promotes healthy brain and eye development in children.

The settlement:

  • bars NBTY, NatureSmart, and Rexall Sundown from misrepresenting the amount of any ingredient contained in any product.
  • bars them from misrepresenting that any ingredient, including DHA, promotes brain or eye health or provides any other health benefit, unless the claim is true and backed by competent and reliable scientific evidence.
  • specifies that any violations could subject the NBTY, NatureSmart, and Rexall Sundown to civil penalties.

A refund program to distribute the $2.1 million to purchasers of the Disney and Marvel multivitamins will be administered by the FTC.  The agency will reach out to affected consumers in the coming months.

The FTC vote to approve the administrative complaint and proposed consent order was 5-0.  The FTC will publish an announcement regarding the proposed consent order in the Federal Register shortly.  The proposed consent order will be subject to public comment for 30 days, beginning today and continuing through January 14, 2011, after which the FTC will decide whether to make it final.  Consumers can file a public comment online.  Copies of the complaint, the proposed consent agreement, and an analysis of the agreement to aid in public comment are available from both the FTC’s website at http://www.ftc.gov and the FTC’s Consumer Response Center, Room 130, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W.,Washington, DC 20580.

NOTE: The Commission issues an administrative complaint when it has reason to believethat the law has been or is being violated, and it appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public interest.  The complaint is not a finding or ruling that therespondents have actually violated the law.  A consent order is for settlement purposes only and does not constitute an admission by the respondents of a law violation.  When the Commission issues a consent order on a final basis, it carries the force of law with respect to future actions.  Each violation of such an order may result in a civil penalty of up to $16,000.

The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them.  To file a complaint in English or Spanish, visit the FTC’s online Complaint Assistant or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).  The FTC enters complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to more than 1,800 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.  The FTC’s website provides free information on a variety of consumer topics.
