Duffy Mickeys Bear Makes His Debut

Disney News

On October 14, 2010 at both the Epcot at Walt Disney World and Disney California Adventure park, our newest character, Duffy the Disney Bear will make his much anticipated debut. But who’s Duffy you might ask? He’s Mickey’s very own teddy bear….made with love by Minnie herself.

Duffy the Disney Bear

You see, awhile ago, Mickey was about to set sail on an adventure to visit friends around the world. Minnie made a special gift to keep Mickey company and she presented it to Mickey in a duffle bag. Mickey, delighted with his gift, pulled out the gift, a very special bear, and named him Duffy. Mickey and Duffy embarked on many special voyages and Duffy got to meet all of Mickey’s friends. Each time they returned home, Mickey and Duffy would share their stories and photos with Minnie. While on their travels, Duffy and Mickey landed at Tokyo Disney Sea where they have been meeting and greeting fans for the past few years.

Duffy is not just your typical stuffed bear – he’s Mickey’s bear and he resembles his owner. Duffy’s face is shaped like Mickey’s, he has Mickey heads on his paws, and he has a very unique birthmark on his hip. There is no question who he belongs to.

We are very excited to welcome Duffy here in October to join our character family.

Duffy the Disney Bear Costumes

Not only will guests get to meet Duffy and have their picture taken with him, but we will launch Duffy’s full line of costumes and souvenirs like key chains, magnets, zip pouches and even pre-dressed Duffys that will launch for special holidays like Christmas and Easter and occasions such as birthdays and graduations. The launch will also consist of some special treats like his crispy treat, chocolatey cake, moulded dessert cup, menu placemat with activities and coming later, Duffy’s very own moulded popcorn bucket. In addition, Epcot’s Kidcot mask program will be changing to a unique Duffy that Guests can take from country to country to color, decorate, and receive country specific Duffy stamps.

Duffy will be located at a newly created venue inside Epcot across from the Mexico boat ramp and at Disney California Adventure park on Paradise Pier.

I can’t wait for you to meet Duffy. He’s so loveable and huggable and I can’t wait to hear where you will take YOUR Duffy!!!!

“Urban” Exploring Disney

Do you remember Discovery Island?

History of Discovery Island…

In 1974 Disney took an 11 1/2 acre island on Bay Lake, and named it “Treasure Island.”  There was a pirate theme that they followed for some time.  In 1978 the island was renamed “Discovery Island”.  The island finally closed in 1999, and it is said that the animals were relocated to Animal Kingdom.  Speculation to why is based on the low admission sales, and also the Animal Kingdom opening.

Anyway…

I am not one to condone illegal activity, but reading a recent news story made me remember “Yesteryears” of Disney.  A guy went over to Discovery Island to see what was there, and took some photos.  While this was a dangerous, and yet bold move I must reiterate that it was illegal, unsafe, and selfish.  It was closed for a reason, and there is no real reason in going there.

Here is copy of the news story…

ORLANDO, Fla. —

One online blogger calls it re-discovering an abandoned attraction, Walt Disney World calls it trespassing.A local man’s visit to the old closed-down Discovery Island is creating a buzz with the park. It’s part of a growing online subculture called Urban Exploring.

Explorer Shane Perez recently bragged on a blog and posted pictures about a secret trip to the old zoological attraction.

Discovery Island shut down in 1999.

Perez said he and some friends swam to the island, discovering abandoned buildings, cages, preserved snakes in jars, even old employee photos.

“It’s a certain visceral experience you can’t really define,” Perez said. “It’s exploring your environment anything urban, anything manmade.”

Disney said it may ban Perez for life from all of its properties.

While we are exploring this topic I will say that I did some searching of the WWW, and what I found amazed me.  I found a site that had video of their “Explorations” of the Horizons Pavilion in Epcot.  Basically these people hopped out of the ride vehicle, and went below the ride, and also went other places.

This kind of activity is not something I promote.  Disney has probably raised the security bar in light of some of the things that you can find other people have done.  Keep in mind that Disney can prosecute someone that is trespassing, or has trespassed if they have enough evidence.

Other Disney World Rumors

Here is a piece of news for the DVC members that frequent my site…

  1. The Animal Kingdom Villas are actually costing less points then Old Key West, which is known for having low points.

Here are some things that I personally checked in on, or found out while I was there in Oct. / Nov. 2009.

  1. While my wife was at the Animal Kingdom she overheard one of the animal caretakers talking about one of the elephants giving birth by April 2010.
  2. Smoking sections are “Magically” moving around.  Spots exist that aren’t on the maps, and spots on the maps aren’t existing.
  3. The full sized Figment character that appeared near JIA in Epcot has been retired.  I was told that this was due to a safety issue that they found.  Goodbye Figment… We love you.
  4. Billy Ocean was at Epcot during the Food & Wine Festival this week.
  5. Fastpass tickets do not need to be used at the exact times that are stamped on them.
  6. Decorations for XMas are going up in almost every spot that you can imagine.  There is currently a large scaffold setup around the castle for lighting work that is being done.  I actually turned into the backstage area of Hollywood Studios, and saw a bunch of trees being prepped next to the metal buildings.
  7. It appears from what I heard, and observed that riding in the front of the monorails has been stopped for the time being.
  8. As previously reported on, but never confirmed by me… McDonalds french fries have been removed from the areas that originally offered them.
  9. As previously reported on, but never confirmed by me… the Pleasure Island clubs are closed.
  10. The bathroom / skyway station by Space Mountain is almost fully gone.  All that remains is the lower half which houses the bathrooms.  Currently there is a fence surrounding the area.  Just outside the fence is a new stage area called Club 626.  There was a character dancing show that had Stitch, Goofy, and Pluto.
  11. Next to Buzz Lightyear there was a stage area.  There is now a wall up, and a character greeting area is setup there.  Buzz was there greeting characters when I was there.
  12. The People Mover was in full operation.  When we went through Space Mountain you couldn’t see much, but it does appear that they are actively working on the ride in anticipation of the Christmas holiday.  Some rumors have said that it is expected to open by the end of November 2009.

Disney News #7

News gathered from various sources across the web…

  1. Demolition has begun on the long dormant Tommorowland Skyway Station. Although details of the project are still sketchy, it has been internally announced that the renovations are planned to be complete November 2009 and will included refurbished Guest restrooms. While there has been no confirmation of a connection, it is being speculated these renovations will somehow be tied to the current major refurbishment of the adjacent Space Mountain attraction.
  2. The Grand Floridian Resort has begun a refurbishment project in the Lobby section of the Main Building. According to Resort Cast, a new marble flooring is being installed that will feature an artistic design that incorporates such Disney Characters as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto and Cinderella. So far, this project has not been reported to significantly impact Guests’ stay. A completion date for this project has yet to be reported.
  3. The KidCOT concept has migrated from Epcot to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Kid Spot has recently opened near the KRNR The Rock Station snack kiosk. This new activity station offers children the ability to decorate large paper CD’s at no cost. It is currently not known if this is the only Kid Spot location planned for the Studios or if others will be added around the park as well.
