Many Different Way Of Travelling To Disney

Based on where you live you have already figured out the best way for your family to get to Disney World, or DisneyLand.  I have been doing a lot of different research throughout the years and have many different views on this.

Originally when my wife was just my girlfriend we went to Florida with my parents.  All of us packed into my parents RV.  It was pretty nice being able to get up, and down whenever we chose.  Having a refrigerator was great too.  Once we decided we wanted to vacation at our own pace we didn’t really get to go away with them much anymore.

We used to drive to, and from New Jersey to Orlando, FL.  The costs of fuel wasn’t as bad back then.  One year we took my mom to the airport so she could go home.  Within 3 hours she called us and told us that she was home.  Well… We weren’t even halfway out of Florida due to traffic, and such.  After that we started looking into flights.  There are only a small handful of companies that actually transport between New Jersey and Orlando, FL. without stop offs.  Whenever we could we would book the travel, but we also learned something about the flights.  If you were selected from “volunteers” at the flight gate you were eligible to be “Bumped”.  This bump would get you a different flight later that day, or the next day.  In addition it would normally include hotel, and meal voucher.  The bad part about flying is that you either need to stay strictly on Disney grounds, or you need to rent a vehicle.  I routinely see specials on many of the airlines like Kuwait Airways flights, and Alitalia, but these are just not going to be something I can use.

The way we are travelling now is with Amtrak.  We take our car on the train and that allows us to have our own vehicle in Florida and also makes it so that we don’t have to rent a car.  A few years ago we found out about a credit card through chase that allows us to earn miles for each dollar spent.  Those miles can be redeemed towards travel.  We only get to travel one way because when we take our vacations it is usually a holiday time, and Amtrak has “Black Out” periods that make it so we can’t use our “Amtrak Guest Rewards” to get FREE travel one of the ways.  On the train we board around 3pm.  We are served dinner that night, and breakfast the next day.  There is a smoking car, electric for laptops, etc., and a car on the train that offers cookies, fruit, water  and more.

How do you travel to Florida?  Is it cost effective in your opinion?  Do you have any suggestions?

Hunting For Cruise Necessities

Leaving for our Disney Cruise in just about 14 days we are scrambling to get everything accomplished that we need done. We have been so consumed with getting our groups T-Shirts done that we never got to finish shopping for our Fish Extender goods. Now we are running around getting the stuff we need to get our Fish Extenders ready, and packed. We tried to think of anything that would go well for either kids, or adults. The FE is a very hard thing to prepare for.

Finding a large amount of things for a reasonable rate is a hard thing to do.  We found a real nice deal on EBay for some noise cancelling headphones. They were decorated, and good for boys, or girls. The cost is what set us back. We have thought of small toys, and some specialty things that we could make, but haven’t come to final thoughts on what to do.

So you ask “What is a Fish Extender?”

A Fish Extender is a set of pockets that hang outside of your cruise stateroom door. Usually before a cruise you get to talk to some of the other people that are going on the cruise on some sort of cruise forum. For our purposes it was DisBoards, and our own Facebook Group. Each participating person puts something surprise inside the FE. It is like Christmas in a way.

Have you ever participated in a FE? Have you ever done a Disney Cruise?

Traveling To Disney World

Each time we go to Disney World we have to sit down and weigh out how we are going to get there.  A few years ago we decided against flying for the time being.  Most people criticize me because they can get there in 3 hours from the East while it takes me 16 hours minimum.  Well, I can say that I am one thing that they are not… That is money conscious.  Flights have gotten very expensive, and the 2 hours before a flight needs to also be considered.

We leave from New Jersey and I drive as much as possible.  My wife has been driving a few hours here and there so that I can take a snooze.  As long as she has the car gps on she is alright.  We can get to Florida for under $400 for all three of us.  I know that flights are not that cheap.  Some people have even said that they pay $9 for their airline membership.  Well I know better.  They also need to understand that they are flying on the airlines schedule.  They may have to go at a totally different time than they wanted in order to get that pricing.

We enjoy what we do, and that is that.  We also save on not having to get a rental car.  We go off grounds from time to time.  Shopping is also necessary.  We did recently get involved in Amtrak Auto Train.  We earn points for using their credit card.  We just booked our return trip for all 3 of us from Florida with the car for $275.00.  Find a flight, and rental car for that.

What do you do when you travel?  Do you drive, or fly?

I Want To Visit DisneyLand California

I have been going back and forth with my wife about taking a vacation out to California.  Why?  Well, when I was a kid I got to go to California to visit my uncle.  He worked at the L.A. Zoo managing the elephant, and camel ride.  I didn’t mind the heat out there.  I want to take my daughter, and wife out to California so that she can experience all that is out there.  One of the main things that I want both to see is DisneyLand.  Neither of them can understand that the size of the entire DisneyLand is about equivalent to I would venture… The Magic Kingdom.  What I told her is that we could save money by taking our camper.  Granted I would need a good towing plan like the Good Sam towing, or AAA so that if anything happens I have it covered.  She doesn’t want to make that trip because it is approximatelly 7 days drive out, and 7 days drive back.  Then you have to add on time to stay, and enjoy what you went to see.  Maybe even add in a stop in Vegas, and the Sequoia forest.  The only way that I could allow it to happen would be during the summer, and that isn’t the brightest thing someone could do.  Why is that the only time?  Well, I don’t want my daughter missing that much school, and what we do take her out of is enough.

If you have any good thoughts on how I can convince them to go to CA. then please let me know.

Planning Your Disney Vacation

Many people have no idea where to start, or what they need when planning a trip to Disney. I have successfully mastered this part. I have been doing this for @15 years with my family, and I have also taken some of what I learned from my parents into this.

Here is a complete rundown from top to bottom on planning a complete Disney Vacation.

  • Start looking for flights, or rental cars months earlier than you are going. (Most flight companies offer specials up to 3 months prior to flying.)
  • If driving to Disney, then contact AAA (if you are a member), and check on driving routes, etc. If you aren’t a member, then think about getting AAA, as a breakdown on the road could be costly.
  • If you are driving with a camper, then start looking for a place to stop for the night if you are going to stop on your way. read more
